Donald Sanborn III (1994)
Instrumentation: Do you really need to ask? Actually, yes.
Alto Saxophone, B-flat Trumpet, and the following Percussion
instruments: Snare Drum, Tambourine, Cymbals, and Maraca.
In a sense, this piece is an answer to my duets for oboe
and piano. The melodies in the duets are fairly short. In
this piece, I attempted to write melodies which could be
sustained for a longer time. As for the relationship between
the instruments, this piece is the opposite of the duets in
that these instruments cannot be independent of one another;
the texture is tightly woven.
The form of the composition is AABCA, the slow B and C
sections providing a contrast in tempo to the fast A
sections. The overall rhythmic feel of the piece is that of
a tango.
